Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

YouTube

In theaters literally a year from now!

By now, you're all probably sick of seeing this trailer redone in LEGO, but Smeagol and I worked meticulously to get this as accurate to the original as possible. I think we did a serviceable job.

Honestly, I didn't like this one much. IMO a lot of the shots looked half-finished, and the grading was a tiny bit flat. While I like the idea of the brick clouds and saber blade, they didn't look 'there'. Sorry, but I really didn't get hyped over this, like I did over some of the ones done within the first day or so of the actual trailer's release, even though 70% weren't as professional.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

I disagree with jampot. Other than clearly only having access to a very old x-wing model, this is the best looking LEGO version I've seen. The ball droid really stands out, and the forest was also much closer to the original than in any other version I've seen. It's really an excellent piece of work, and I can tell you guys worked really hard on it. Am I sick of LEGO versions of the trailer? Yes, but if I ever feel like going back and watching it in LEGO, this is the one I'll go back too.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

This was just beatiful. The balance between VFX and animation was very well done, you captured the overall visual style of the trailer really, really well, with my favorite of course being the stormtroopers. Spot-on. Very impressive, solid work. mini/smile

Thanks everyone! This was a fun project.

The grading matches the real trailer exactly. I have found that real movies tend to look a little more "flat" than a lot of digital video that is online, it is part of the film aesthetic.

It's not an old x-wing, Zach built it mostly from scratch to match the design in the trailer. (The x-wing design in the new film is very different from the original trilogy design)

It's funny, much like when I made a LEGO clip of a scene from The Two Towers, many critiques are cases of people not liking details that are as they were in the original.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

Quite an excellent remake.

My only nitpick is that in the forest scene, the sith's legs don't match the ground he's walking on (though it is hardly noticeable, and didn't take away from the film).

I was in awe throughout the entire trailer.

While I stand by my original statement (sorry) I agree with this. The ball droid was definitely the best of all the versions out there.

It's funny, I never noticed the new engine design until your guys' remake. Now that I look at it more closely it's obviously a custom model. At a glance, the front half looks a ton like the old x-wing set from the early 2000's, with the cockpit at a much more sever angle than the front portion of the ship, so I thought that's what it was. The cockpit has always been a flaw of LEGO X-wings, until the ultimate collectors models anyway. Again, nice job on this guys, it really feels like the actual trailer.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

This was very well done. The movements on the Minifigures are unreal, very professional. I also love the R2 scene, I have watched a lot of other of these, and non of them recreate that scene as accurate as you did. Great job! I really don't have any complaints. Keep up the awesome work man! mini/smile

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

One issue I did have (having seen the still image posted on Facebook) is that the thrust engines were still cylindrical instead of half-cylindrical.

But at least you got the wing splitting correct.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

I was really excited to see this, and I can say it did not disappoint at all. It was amazingly accurate, and really fun to watch. The X-wing scene was spectacular, definitely the highlight of this for me.

Was the sith in the forest scene filmed in the forest? I couldn't tell if he was edited in or not.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

Extremely well done gents!

The X-Wing and Falcon scenes really shine. The attention to detail is impeccable.

The 'first to market' releases always get the headlines and attention, which is a shame, because this version is clearly the best.

This one is definitely the best in my opinion.  Your animation is fantastic as usual.  The brick-built smoke and dust feel reminiscent of The LEGO Movie in a very good way.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

You're right, Lechnology; we couldn't find a piece at that scale that would adequately convey that shape. (all the half cylinder or slope pieces were too large or too small)

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer (in LEGO)

Not bad, but what's with the giant studs (in the beginning sand scene and in the snow scene)? mini/tongue I liked the way you did the ball droid. Like others said, this ball droid is the best one I have seen in a trailer. It's way better than CGI, a marble, basketball, etc...

The stormtrooper scene was great. The lady on the speeder in the desert was kind of strange. Her face was way too large for her face. Minifigure faces are never that large. And the lack of lips on the mouth was strange, and with the big teeth... I don't know, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't my favorite... (I regret this statement)

The X-Wing part looks fantastic. Lots of detail was put into that. Were the clouds and trees 3D renders, or actual photos composited together? The Falcon was really well done. It was so smooth, I thought that it was taken from the original trailer.

Overall, it was good, but there were some flaws, but it didn't make it any less enjoyable. This one was the best LEGO version of the trailer I've seen (though, I haven't seen them all, I try to avoid Star Wars trailers).

This is so damn good. I am blown away, you guys absolutely nailed this one. Great blend of stop motion and CGI, I'm gonna have fun going through this one frame by frame.

Hope to see this video make a trip around the web!

I know I'm biased for this particular example since I worked on the film, but (some) of you guys are unbelievable. A paragraph about not liking a minifig's mouth?! I can fully understand why many people post their films here once, then never come back, and why I get the complaint I now am making several times a month about this site. It's not a minority of posters in this forum who are the problem. The redemptive comments simply don't make up for the number of wet blankets on this site.

A film being posted is an invitation to review it, or tell the filmmaker what you liked and what you think they could work on in the future, not pick apart every detail.

I know I've whined about this on other peoples' films in the past, I suppose it doesn't help much. I'll work on drafting a new set of common sense guidelines later today.

Looking back at my own post as well, I think you're actually right. It seems like it's very seldom that films here can just be appreciated for what they are rather than torn apart. I'm sorry in part for my hyper-criticism on what's actually a good piece of work, especially considering a lot of the critical comments on my own videos (and some of my reactions to them).

You can articulate it better, but I've been feeling this for a while (and so I now feel aghast that I've unwittingly become part of it), and this doesn't feel like the same forum that I was thanking for helping me through high school, like I did earlier this year. If anything, I've been spending more time away, with another community, which is a shame.

Some new 'common sense' guidelines would be a good idea. This thread epitomises why, and it's a shame, but we're all starting to forget that at the end of the day, we're all amateurs; nothing we do will ever be perfect (though it might be pretty amazing) and while that's no excuse to shower everyone with copious amounts of praise, it's something to consider when making tiny, irrelevant criticisms.

If anyone thinks I'm being hypocritical, I'm including myself in this. While my opinion's my opinion, I honestly regret being so nitpicky in my first post. And sorry if this seems OTT, but I've been writing essays all day and I'm feeling stir crazy.

You are right. I guess I'm one of those people who pick apart details. Sorry about that. I guess it's hard not to, because everyone else sort of does it, so we all just do it. I guess we just don't know the difference between criticism and constructive criticism. We should appreciate the film without having to tell everyone what was wrong with it. Though, I always liked getting feedback on my film instead of everyone putting on their good face telling you how the film is good instead of helping you improve. Maybe it's just me though...

I still like your film, I think it is the best Star Wars trailer out there, I was just pointing out a few things, sorry to be rude... mini/sad
