Re: Picturesque

I hate to say it, but I felt this film just wasn't very good. The CG was good at times, while other times, such as the shot of the outside of a warehouse looking building, were terrible seeing as how it would have been more effective using real pieces. The voices were at times not deep enough, not to mention there was no emotion. I felt like I was watching some kind of Ed Wood movie. However, the animation, lighting, and musical score were superb.

3/5, and this is from no expectations whatsoever.

Re: Picturesque

I need to agree with Joseph, the CGI was quite good, but sometimes not necessarry. To continue on what he said: I thought the editing made the film very slow (action scene's where they stop, talk, and go further, WAY TO SLOW). The voice-acting could be better also, the cops sounded both like teenagers (sorry if they weren't).

But enough with critisizing this awesome film. Cinematography, Animation, and CGI were frikkin awesome. The music was a bit too soft and I couldn't hear it properly, but it was ok. I've heard better tough.

overall 3.5/5 but still a classic

Re: Picturesque

Visually, I have got to admit, this is amazing. Released on Youtube on the last day of 2009, it could just count for a BIM 2009 Award in best visual effects. And, I have not seen visual effects like this since 'Unrenewable' - which despite me yelling to anyone who listens that its overrated - DID have amazing visuals.

Story wise....meh. The concept of Picture-Portals is facinating and, amazingly, Original. But everything else.....okish.

But I have three Plot-Holes that must be adressed:

Spoiler (click to read)

1. I never got the motivation of the antagonist. Why did he think controlling the portals would create his own world? As far as we see, the Portals can only transport, and even if they could create their own worlds, why doesnt he like earth - and who doesnt he like on earth. And if the only person who can draw the portals was this man (what the hell is his name!?), then why didnt Smeagol kidnap him? Its pointless if you just let the man you want walk away. "Oh dont worry about him. We'll wait for the cops to corner us, and THEN we'll get him!"

2. Where the f**k is the president!? There is not a single mention of him after he got kidnapped. Smeagol is in a big black van, but there is no President. He never gets found, there is no mention of him afterwards....did they just leave him on a desert island? Did they kill him? WHERE IS HE!?

And why would you want to kidnap the President anyway? To get all the Portals? If the Portals really can create new worlds, why dont they just kidnap the guy who makes them, and force him to make them? If their going into that much effort to kidnap the President, why not just do that?

Why would you need the existing ones anyway? Surely they just lead to random places in the world. And if they knew how to make a Portal, then why did they need the man to make one for them, and surely they could create one straight away? But the only Portal I saw that went to a fictional place was the world of fire, so if the Portals can't go to fictional places, then this brings me back to the point as to why the guy thinks he can create a new world. And even if they could make new worlds, why doesnt everyone have their own little world? I dont get it both ways.

3. WHO CARRIES 1 MILLION DOLLARS IN THEIR BACK POCKET!?! And I dont mean physically carrying them - I undertsand that the one tiny 1 by 1 square must have been some kind of digital credit system. But where in the world does a simple Police Officer/Former Captain have a Million Dollars? Why would you even be working if you had that much money? I know what your saying: "1 Million Dollars isnt enough to retire on", well then why was he giving it away so willingly? If he gives it away without a second thought, then he must own way more than that. "But it could be money from the government" you say. WHAT GOVERNMENT GIVES THEIR OFFICERS MILLIONS OF DOLLARS?? Never in the world of fantasy or reality have I ever come across a government who does that!

3.5. And a Knife wound would kill you, and quite quickly. To be honest, there was no point in the painter guy surviving anyway.

My final and biggest critique was the voice actors. I mean nothing personal to any of them, but they were, in true Nick Durron Fashion, HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!! At parts it made the movie either un-watchable or hilarious, both of which were un-intentional. Its so funny when the main guy (who sounds like Keanu Reeves on heilium) is trying to do something that is trying to resemble a 'dramatic' moment. Its unbearable when the bad guy is declaring his plans to 'take over the world' or whatever, and it makes me want to go off and watch 'The Inventor', which by far had better voice actors.

To quote Nathan Wells (who is off having a life): "The Voices made me want to jump off a cliff" (I would say pull out my testicles, but this works too....)

In short, the voice acting killed the movie. I think that with better voice actors, I may have overlooked some of the Plot-Holes, and would have felt more positive to the movie. I mean, its not bad, but its one of those movies that are like: "Ooooh! Pretty images! Oh, by the way a-man-can-create-some-portals-out-of-paintings, the-president-was-kidnapped-by-smeagol, and these-two-cops-with-stupid-voices-are-trying-to-stop-him-because-their-cops......oooh! Pretty images!"

A ground breaker in Brickfilming Visual effects - but I would have enjoyed it much more if the sound was off. I may be seeming too harsh, but the Voice acting really did destroy all enjoyment.

Oh and the music was awesome.

3/5. But be careful - pretty images and Joseph Frank wont save you next time.

Re: Picturesque

When I finished watching it, I felt that the movie needed something else, don't know what. It's not only that the voices needed to be different. I found the holes that Max butcher mentioned, and maybe that's the problem. I agree that some things need to be explained. Also, from what I saw in the trailer, I was expecting a bit more, in the plot, in some sequences, but still, it was enjoyable to watch.
Probably, the visual effects and lighting distracted me from something I may have missed, and I can't rate it higher than 3.5/5.

Thanks for mentioning that. Now I will not be able to rest until I figure out what trope that is. I KNOW it's a trope, I just can't remember which one it is.

Anyway, I kind of agree that this film, while it had impressive effects, was kind of lacking in everything else. I liked the picture portals, but I didn't think they were all that original; the books in the Myst games do many of the same things, mostly the world creation] though. I would have liked to see them used more, though, as far as the world creation] stuff goes.

I find it impressive that you were able to get this finished; two years is a long time to work on a brickfilm, and most people would lose motivation about a month or two in; so congrats.

Re: Picturesque

Hm.

I really enjoyed the visuals.  The CGI was good, it blended very well.  The animation was good, too.  The mouth movements were very good, for the most part.  I wasn't a huge fan of the story.  I really liked the idea, but I didn't get enough information about the characters to care about them enough.  There wasn't much character development.  My biggest grope was with the voice acting.  I'm really picky when it comes to this.  Most of the dialogue just sorta bugged me.  I couldn't understand a lot of what Mr. Glacialis said.  President?  Present? Parent? What did he say?  I had to decipher what he was saying.  I would have spent more time getting better voice actors.

The voice acting was enough that I didn't enjoy this nearly as much as I wanted to.

Re: Picturesque

What a way to start the Brick Film year (or for Nick to end 09).
Very ambitious, dare I say epic. The BiM regulars took no time it ripping parts of it to shreds so I’m not going down that road.
It’s no secret that as an animator I prefer wham bam it your face action.
Overall the story is just not my style I only kept watching because it was a Brickfilm.

Some of the lighting and shots were really inspiring (I so need to lift my game in that area).
The brick sets were excellent, the white house was brilliant. Brick sets beat CGI hands down everytime IMO.
Well done Nick, well played, Bravo!

Hmm...I'd be very interested to hear which Hans Zimmer score you thought this sounded like...very interested. And I'm very surprised and a little put out that you didn't even catch the blatant references to John Williams in the action cues. mini/confused

Re: Picturesque

Amazing work, visual effects are really great.

Re: Picturesque

I thought that, visually, the film excelled. The animation was nice, too, especially combined with real and CGI bricks.

As said before, some of the voice-acting was a little weak, but not a blunder to the film. Some more background noises might have helped as well. Like train noises at the train station, etc.

Excellent job! The story was fun to follow through and enjoyable mini/smile !

[Picturesque] is a magnificent work.  Technically it's superb, and the character animation is perfect (the expressions on their faces, etc.).  Also, the visual effects and the mood lighting really succeed.  The only qualms I had with it were that the music and sound effects were a bit behind, and the pacing was a bit off.  Even though the action scenes are great, you could have expanded on them a bit more.

I did my best.
