Topic: Hate your own voice?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N970lhPK1hY
I'm sure we've all experienced this. I watched this video because it came up in the suggestions bar, and I deal with this my self. I decided to look into this and found this article. http://www.marquette.edu/magazine/recen … 1260897469 ... So I'm not the only one falsely blaming my cheap, low-quality mic. So I did even further research and found this, http://vocalcoach.hubpages.com/hub/6-Re … Your-Voice . So apparently no one else hears my voice the way I do. Shame, I quite like the way I sound sometimes mini/tongue . I found that actually doing exercises and recording in specific positions while recording can help you achieve the voice you already have, if that makes any sense at all. This find I have mixed opinions about, I'm kinda disappointed that it was really me sounding no-so-great this whole time, but a bit hopeful at the fact it can be fixed. And being a musician, just interested in general mini/lol . So, I hope this helped, what do you think of this find?

Nice job! I have learned something today! This is kind of off topic but do you have any tips on getting rid of echoes when recording sound? (I use a rockband mic)

Re: Hate your own voice?

Hmmm... Maybe try foam boards? Or with audacity try this. Or maybe use both mini/wink .

Re: Hate your own voice?

It's true! Like when I record lines for other people, the voice I hear is mature and boy-ish. But, when I hear my voice recorded in Audacity, I sound like a little kid. It's the weirdest thing!

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Yeah, that's bone hearing.  We sound different to ourselves.  We never hear our real voice.

Re: Hate your own voice?

I used to feel this problem, and I didn't like my voice, however, I've been recording myself and playing it back in voice acting for six years now, and I have become very used to it and now think that it's okay.
Just record yourself several times and then play it back.  You will get the hang of it.

It's an interesting problem though.
I have a similar problem of disliking my face in photographs since I'm used to seeing it in a mirror and it's not symmetrical.

Heh, it took me eight years to realize that my nose wasn't set right (kicked in the face), resulting in it being significantly off-center. Don't know how I managed to avoid noticing it that long; it's pretty obvious.

Personally I've come to terms with the way my voice sounds. I used to worry about it because it wasn't naturally deep or smooth, but ultimately the performance matters more than the voice itself. It's great to improve the voice you have (which seems to be the intent behind the links in the original post), but I think it's also important to accept that some of us will never have a classically beautiful voice- and that's alright. No reason to try to be something you aren't, right? There are other ways to deliver memorable performances.
